Hey, kiddo, how are you doing? Are you eating and drinking? Did you make it out of the maze okay?

[OH NO CLINT

She answers eventually, later that day, sounding a little more hesitant than usual.]

I'm eating and drinking a little every hour, when I'm awake.

[awwnoun]

[ He's glad to hear from her! He and Watson had talked about her, and... well. ]

Good, good - are you okay?

[titanette]

Clint, what did your eyes look like? Before they changed back.

[It's an answer that's not an answer.]

[awwnoun]

[ A beat - he actually has to take a second to make his voice steady. ]

Uh - the Prophet ones. Why?

[titanette]

When we were there, did you want to hurt anyone?

[awwnoun]

No, not really. Are you asking because you had the Prophet eyes and you wanted to hurt someone?

[titanette]

[Whoop, there it is.]

I tried to hurt someone. I-- it happened on the base, too.

[awwnoun]

So it's probably not the eyes. [ A beat. ] It's okay. Can you tell me what happened on the base?

[titanette]

[She's still hesitant and reluctant, but she tells him all the same.]

Miss Justineau got too close. She was wearing chemicals, but still - I could smell her.

[awwnoun]

Okay. [ Clint pauses for a long moment. ] Alright, I'm gonna tell you what I think this is. I don't want you to be scared or upset because it isn't your fault, okay?

[titanette]

Okay.

[She sounds apprehensive, but if he thinks he has answers, she wants to hear them. She's already spent a good deal of time thinking about how she's going to handle this, and it hasn't started to feel any less overwhelming.]

[awwnoun]

I talked it over with John. John Watson? And we think you might be like... a zombie. Of some kind. Which sounds awful, but it kind of explains the biting thing. Do you know what that is?

[titanette]

No. I've never heard that word before.

[She knows if she had, she would remember.]

[awwnoun]

It's - alright, so where I come from, zombies... zombies are people who have died and come back to life, and they gotta eat people. But they're usually not very smart and can't have conversations, and obviously you're way smarter than me so that's why I said kind of.

John says there's stuff in his world about zombies where it's more like a virus, and you can learn to control it. So it's kind of like being sick, but you can learn to not be.

[titanette]

That can't be it. At least-- not like that. I never died.

[She isn't sure whether to be relieved or disappointed. Being a zombie sounds awful, and yet... you can learn to not be.]

[awwnoun]

Right, but - people can be infected by it. Or maybe injected with the virus. It works differently in all the different movies I've seen.

I'm not really a doctor or scientist or any sort of expert.

[titanette]

The scientists and doctors were studying us.

[She's never really thought of it in those terms before, but it fits, and without even having to think about it she knows that that's exactly what they were doing.]

[awwnoun]

Then - yeah, maybe that's what it was. [ He's frowning and it comes out in his voice. ] I have no idea how to help here, but I'll figure it out.

Are you still alone?

[titanette]

Yes.

[She takes a deep breath, steeling her voice.]

I should be.

[awwnoun]

... Yeah, maybe for now. [ He admits, holding his tablet a little more tightly. ] Just until we can figure out how to fix this. But you can call me whenever you want, okay? If you get lonely, or if someone is in the same house as you on accident and you need help.

I know it sucks traveling here by yourself, I'm sorry.

[titanette]

It's all right. I'm by myself a lot at the base, and we don't get tablets.

[awwnoun]

Yeah. I guess that's true.

What do you do while you're by yourself? Read a lot, I bet, right?

[titanette]

Oh, yes. I read Miss Justineau's book. And I think, and I count, and I do maths problems in my head.

[awwnoun]

Do you have people you get to hang out with? Other kids your age?
